On September 29, 2024, Senate Bill 896 for the Artificial Intelligence Accountability Act was signed by the Governor of California into law following its introduction to the California State Senate on January 3, 2024. The Act requires the Government Operations Agency, the Department of Technology, and the Office of Data and Innovation to develop and maintain guidelines for state agencies and departments to analyze the impact that adopting generative artificial intelligence (AI) may have on vulnerable communities. These groups must also produce a State of California Benefits and Risk of Generative AI Report which includes: an examination of significant and potentially beneficial uses of gene
